Academy Sound & Vision's laudable Gaudeamus series continues with a disc devoted to the music of Pierre de la Rue, one of the shining lights of Renaissance music on the evidence of these wonderfully evocative works.
The 'Missa de Sancta Cruce' is a five movement work in classic style that contains some very touching passages with a lovely Credo that contains some ravishing music for contrapuntal voices. I was also pretty much impressed with the aptly titled motet, 'Considera Israel'.
There is also a short snippet of Gregorian Chant to introduce the disc and a piece by Johannes de Quadris, an obscure and unknown composer, in the shape of two Lamentations that also contains some intriguing music.
The Clerk's Group are conducted with the usual vigour and intensity by Edward Wickham and the recording is top class. Obviously, investors in this lengthy and diverse series will want to add this disc to their collection.
